Yaad Shayari (Missing Someone)

Verses for missing someone — distance, old photographs, and the hope of meeting again.

Yaad — remembering, missing — may be the most universal feeling shayari has ever served. A parent in the village and a child in the city; college friends scattered across three time zones; a grandparent looking at old photographs: every one of them knows the small ache of someone being far away. Hindi and Urdu poetry has spent centuries turning that ache into something you can hold, and even send.

The verses here are written for that use. They are tender but not hopeless — missing someone, in this collection, always points toward meeting them again. Send one instead of a "long time!" text; it says the same thing, but the person will keep it.

Dooriyaan sirf raaston ki hoti hain, Dilon mein to tum roz aate-jaate ho.

Distance belongs only to the roads — in the heart, you come and go every single day.

Shaam hote hi tera zikr chhid jaata hai, Hawa bhi shayad tujhse mil ke aati hai.

The moment evening falls, talk of you begins — perhaps even the breeze arrives here after meeting you.

Purani tasveerein bolti nahin hain magar, Har baar kuchh naya suna jaati hain.

Old photographs never speak — and yet every time, they tell me something new.

Yaad aana shikaayat nahin, tohfa hai, Har kisi ki qismat mein ye mithaas nahin.

To be remembered is not a complaint, it is a gift — not everyone's fate holds this sweetness.

Phone ki ghanti pe ab bhi lagta hai, Shayad us paar se teri aawaaz aaye.

At every ring of the phone I still think — perhaps this time your voice will come from the other end.

Milna zaroori nahin yaad rehne ke liye, Kuchh rishte khushboo ki tarah saath chalte hain.

Meeting is not required for remembering — some bonds travel with you like a fragrance.

Tere shahar mein baarish ki khabar aayi hai, Yahan dhoop mein bhi tera khayaal bhigo gaya.

News came that it is raining in your city — here, even in full sunshine, the thought of you soaked me through.

Waqt marham hai, sabne yahi kaha, Par yaad to waqt se bhi purani nikli.

Everyone said time is the healer — but memory turned out to be older than time itself.

Jo door jaake bhi duaaon mein rehte hain, Wahi rishte asal mein ameer karte hain.

The ones who stay in your prayers even after going far — those are the bonds that truly make a life rich.

Yaad ke bahaane hi sahi, milte to hain, Khwaabon ki bhi apni mehmaan-nawaazi hai.

Even if only by way of memory, at least we meet — dreams, too, keep a hospitality of their own.

Faasle chahe jitne bhi ho jaayen, Apnon ki yaad ka raasta chhota hota hai.

However long the distances grow, the road that memory takes to your own people stays short.

Mulaaqaat ki ummeed zinda rakhna, Yaad wahi achhi jo milne pe khatm ho.

Keep the hope of meeting alive — the best kind of longing is the one that ends in a reunion.

How to send a yaad shayari without making it heavy

A yaad verse works best as a light knock on the door, not a confession. Good occasions: when a song or a street reminds you of someone; on the anniversary of a trip together; when a friend moves cities; on a Sunday call with parents that you want to open warmly. Sent that way, the verse reads as "you crossed my mind" — which is all it needs to say.

Two cautions. Don't send a stack of sad verses to someone who is grieving or going through a breakup — pick one hopeful line (the later verses in this collection lean that way) and let them respond. And with elders, the Devanagari-plus-roman format matters: send the original script, since for many parents the script itself is part of the warmth.

Questions readers ask

Is yaad shayari the same as sad shayari?
They overlap but are not the same. Sad shayari sits with heartbreak; yaad shayari is about the presence of an absent person — which can be warm, grateful, even sweet. Most verses here could be sent to a parent, an old friend or a sibling, not only to a lost love. For heartbreak specifically, see our Sad Shayari collection.
What should I send to a friend who just moved abroad?
Pick a verse about bonds surviving distance rather than one about pain — in this collection, the lines about fragrance-like friendships and short roads of memory work well. Add one personal sentence of your own before the verse; a sher plus one true sentence beats a paragraph of small talk.
Are these verses original?
Yes — all twelve were written for this collection and checked against well-known yaad and judaai lines so we are not repeating the classics or the common forwards. If you want one tailored to your own person and moment, the composer on this site writes an original verse from your keywords.
