Diwali Shayari 2026 — Original Verses for the Festival of Lights
Twelve original Diwali verses, written for this page — for family groups, for the one you love, for friends, for everyone far from home, and for the short line you put on a status.

Diwali is the biggest sending day in the Indian year. For a week beforehand the same golden-glitter images begin their annual lap of every group you belong to, and by the morning itself most phones have received the same picture eleven times. The verse you write, or choose carefully, is the one message that gets read rather than scrolled past.
Every verse below is original — written for this page, not collected from elsewhere — and deliberately kept to the parts of the festival that everyone shares: the lamp, the cleaned house, the doorstep, the sweets, the ledger, the person travelling home. Copy any of them as they are, or use one as the opening line and add your own sentence underneath.
The five days, and what to send on each
Diwali is not one day but five, and the greeting that fits Dhanteras is not the one that fits Bhai Dooj. Sending the right thing on the right morning is most of the etiquette.
Friday, 6 November
Dhanteras
The buying day — metal for the house, the first lamp at the door. Greetings here are about prosperity and a well-kept home. Good day for the message to a business contact.
Saturday, 7 November
Choti Diwali (Narak Chaturdashi)
The quieter evening before. Send to the people you would rather reach before the flood — a friend, someone you have not spoken to in a year.
Sunday, 8 November
Diwali
The main day. Family groups in the morning, the person you actually miss in the evening. Keep one separate verse for them — they should not receive what the group received.
Monday, 9 November
Govardhan Puja / Annakut
A day of food and gratitude in much of north India. A short, warm line is enough here.
Tuesday, 10 November
Bhai Dooj
Sisters mark a tilak on their brothers’ foreheads. Affectionate and a little teasing is exactly right — the love that grew out of quarrels.
For the family group
Diwali morning
The family group gets the first message of the day, and it should sound like you rather than like a template. These two lean on the part of Diwali that is about the house filling up — the returning, the old faces — which is what the family group is actually celebrating.
दीया तो हर घर में जलता है, रौशनी वहीं ठहरती है — जहाँ लौटने वाले का इंतज़ार होता है।
Diya to har ghar mein jalta hai, raushni wahin thaharti hai — jahan lautne wale ka intezaar hota hai.
नए कपड़े, नई मिठाई, नया हिसाब-किताब — त्योहार फिर भी पुराने चेहरों से ही बनता है।
Naye kapde, nayi mithai, naya hisaab-kitaab — tyohaar phir bhi puraane chehron se hi banta hai.
For the one you love
Diwali evening, sent to one person only
Send this one separately, and later — after the group messages have died down, when the lamps are already lit. A Diwali verse for a lover works by making the whole festival smaller than one person: all that light on one side, and them on the other.
सारे शहर की रौशनी एक तरफ़, और तेरा दरवाज़े पर दीया रखना एक तरफ़।
Saare shahar ki raushni ek taraf, aur tera darwaaze par diya rakhna ek taraf.
तू पास हो तो अमावस भी दिवाली है, तू दूर है तो दिवाली भी अमावस।
Tu paas ho to amavas bhi Diwali hai, tu door hai to Diwali bhi amavas.
For everyone far from home
The night before, allowing for the time difference
Half of the Diwali messages sent every year cross a border or a time zone: to a hostel, a site in the Gulf, a flat in Toronto or Melbourne. Distance verses work best when they are specific about what is missing — a doorstep, a rangoli, the sound of someone else’s crackers — rather than sad in general.
If you are the one abroad, send yours a day early. It arrives while the house is still awake.
यहाँ भी दीये जलाए हैं, क़तार से — पर माँ, तेरी रंगोली वाली चौखट याद आती है।
Yahan bhi diye jalaye hain, qataar se — par Maa, teri rangoli wali chaukhat yaad aati hai.
घड़ी में वक़्त अलग है, त्योहार तो एक ही है — तुम पटाख़े छोड़ना, आवाज़ यहाँ तक आ जाएगी।
Ghadi mein waqt alag hai, tyohaar to ek hi hai — tum pataakhe chhodna, aawaz yahan tak aa jayegi.
For friends
Any of the five days
Friends are the one audience where the greeting can admit that time has passed. Both of these do that — one counts the years, the other admits that a friendship has to be maintained — which is why they land better than a generic wish.
बचपन में हम पटाख़े गिनते थे, अब साल गिनते हैं — पर तेरी शुभकामना आज भी सबसे पहले आती है।
Bachpan mein hum pataakhe ginte the, ab saal ginte hain — par teri shubhkaamna aaj bhi sabse pehle aati hai.
दोस्ती वो दीया है जिसे हवा नहीं बुझाती, बस कभी-कभी तेल डालते रहना पड़ता है।
Dosti wo diya hai jise hawa nahin bujhaati, bas kabhi-kabhi tel daalte rehna padta hai.
Two-line verses for WhatsApp status
Put up on Diwali morning
A status is read in under two seconds and has no recipient, so it needs to be complete on its own. Short, one clear image, nothing that needs context. These two are written to that shape.
अंधेरा भी ज़रूरी था, वरना दीये की क़ीमत कौन समझता।
Andhera bhi zaroori tha, warna diye ki qeemat kaun samajhta.
इस बार सिर्फ़ घर नहीं, थोड़ा मन भी साफ़ किया है।
Is baar sirf ghar nahin, thoda man bhi saaf kiya hai.
For elders, clients and colleagues
Dhanteras or Diwali morning
Diwali is also the start of the business year — the day new ledgers are opened — which is why a wish about accounts and intent is neither odd nor cold. These two stay warm while remaining entirely safe to send to a client, a landlord or a father-in-law.
आपके घर में सुख की बत्ती कभी कम न पड़े, और मेहमानों के लिए मिठाई हमेशा बची रहे।
Aapke ghar mein sukh ki batti kabhi kam na pade, aur mehmaanon ke liye mithai hamesha bachi rahe.
नया साल आपका, नए खाते आपके — हिसाब में बरकत रहे, नीयत में रौशनी।
Naya saal aapka, naye khaate aapke — hisaab mein barkat rahe, niyat mein raushni.
How to make any of these yours
- Add one concrete sentence underneath the verse. Not a compliment — a detail: the sweets your mother only makes this week, the year you both missed Diwali, the balcony where you always light the first lamp. The verse carries the festival; your sentence carries the relationship.
- Do not add a name inside the verse itself. It breaks the metre, and a verse that fits everyone you love is a verse you can send twice in your life.
- And send fewer, later. A message that arrives at nine in the evening, alone, is worth ten that arrive at six in the morning alongside forty others.

- When is Diwali in 2026?
- Diwali 2026 falls on Sunday, 8 November. The five-day festival runs from Dhanteras on Friday 6 November to Bhai Dooj on Tuesday 10 November. Because Diwali follows the lunar calendar, the date moves each year — it was in October in 2025 and returns to 29 October in 2027.
- What should I write in a Diwali message?
- One image and one wish. Pick a single concrete piece of the festival — the first lamp, the cleaned house, the sweets, the ledger — and attach a wish for the person rather than for the world. Two lines that name something real beat a paragraph of general brightness.
- Is it all right to send the same Diwali shayari to everyone?
- To a group, yes — that is what groups are for. But keep one different verse for the person you would call first. The greeting that gets saved is the one that was obviously not sent to eighty people.
- Can I send Diwali shayari to someone who is not Hindu?
- Yes, and it is normal in India to do so. Choose the universal verses — light, a clean house, sweets, a wish for a good year. Every verse on this page is written to be sendable by anyone, to anyone.
- What do I send to someone spending Diwali away from home?
- Name what they are missing rather than telling them not to miss it. The two verses in the section above do exactly that, and they are the ones most likely to be answered rather than acknowledged.
